National Immunization Awareness Month – Protecting Your Pet with Preventive Care

August is National Immunization Awareness Month—a time to highlight the importance of staying up to date on vaccines for both people and pets. For our furry family members, immunizations are one of the easiest and most effective ways to protect against serious illness. From puppyhood to seniorhood, vaccines play a vital role in your pet’s long-term health.

Understanding Why Pet Vaccines Matter

Vaccines help your pet build immunity against harmful diseases that can be life-threatening or contagious to other animals (or sometimes, even humans!). Core vaccines protect against high-risk conditions such as rabies, parvovirus, feline leukemia and more.

Keeping your pet’s vaccines current doesn’t just protect them—it helps safeguard your community, too.

How to Stay on Top of Your Pet’s Immunizations

Being proactive by making preventive care a priority ensures your pet stays healthy year-round. Stay on track with these tips:

  • Schedule Annual Wellness Exams: Your veterinarian will review your pet’s health and vaccine schedule during their yearly visit.
  • Keep Records Handy: Organize your pet’s vaccination history in an easy-to-find spot. This will be helpful for boarding, grooming, or emergency visits.
  • Know the Core Vaccines: Core vaccines, such as rabies, distemper, parvovirus for dogs, and panleukopenia are recommended for all pets, regardless of lifestyle.
  • Ask About Lifestyle Vaccines: If your pet spends time outside or frequently goes to daycare or boarding, your vet may recommend additional vaccines based on exposure risk.

Vaccine Safety and What to Expect

Vaccines are extremely safe and tested for quality. Mild side effects can occur, such as temporary soreness at the injection site or low energy for a day, but serious reactions are rare. If you notice anything unusual after your pet receives a vaccine, call your vet right away.

Keeping your pet on a regular vaccine schedule helps to not only prevent illness, but also the likelihood of emergency treatments down the road.

Caring Starts with Prevention

Protecting your pet with immunizations is one of the most loving things you can do for them. Taking the time to review your pet’s vaccine status can make a huge difference when it comes to their health.
