Understanding Health Challenges: Breeds Prone to Common Health Issues

Pet Health Issues

We all love our pets and want them to live the happiest, healthiest lives possible. Unfortunately, some pets are more susceptible to health issues than others. At Caudle Vet Clinic, we believe that informed and attentive pet owners make the best pet owners. Here are some dog and cat breeds that have common health issues that you should consider if you have this breed of pet or are considering adopting one.

Health Problems In Popular Dog Breeds

  • French Bulldog, Bulldog, or Pug: These dogs have faces that are called “brachycephalic,” meaning that they are short nosed, with flat faces and shortened skulls. The air in their windpipes are often obstructed because of their condensed facial structure. In addition to breathing issues, these types of dogs also often have digestive issues and birthing difficulties because the shortness of their bodies often equates to improper bodily organ function. Pet owners considering getting any of these breeds should be mindful of the health conditions that may arise throughout their lifetime.
  • Dachshunds: These adorable dogs are unfortunately susceptible to intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) because of their short legs, which makes their backs more fragile than those of other breeds. If you notice your Dachshund is limping or seems to be in pain, it is important to call Caudle so we can check for signs of IVDD.
  • German Shepherds: If you are lucky enough to own one of these loyal, curious pups, you should know that a common health concern for this breed is hip issues. German Shepherds are commonly diagnosed with elbow and hip dysplasia, a genetic disease that causes pain in the front and back joints, respectively. A healthy diet, joint supplements, and regular checkups are all preventive measures that can help stop dysplasia from developing.

Health Problems in Popular Cat Breeds

  • Manx: The defining feature of Manx cats is “Manx Syndrome,” or a genetic mutation that leads to a very short tail or no tail at all. This shorting of the tail through systemic breeding negatively affects the spinal cord and nerves, which can, in some cases, lead to partial paralysis and other problems. If you are caring for a cat with severe Manx Syndrome, incontinence diapers, stool softeners, and cleaning the cat’s fur can help, but be sure to consult Caudle before treating your cat at home.
  • Scottish Fold: Like Manx cats, Scottish Fold cats signature features are also associated with their disease. Scottish Fold cats are affected by osteochondrodysplasia, which is why their ears are rounded forward. The cartilage throughout the cat’s body is affected by this mutation, which can cause serious health issues such as arthritis, spinal abnormalities, and limb deformities.
  • Siamese Cat: These beautiful cats can often develop hip dysplasia, which means that the ball and socket joints of their hip fail to develop normally. They also are prone to asthma, which strikes when they have inflamed or narrow lungs and nasal passages. If your pet has continuous difficulty breathing, be sure to call our team at Caudle, as it could be a sign they are developing asthma.

If you have a pet that has common health issues, it is important to be mindful of the potential, common health risks they face to ensure their longevity and well being. No matter the breed of your pet, it is important to schedule regular checkups to keep them happy and healthy. Contact Caudle Vet Clinic today to set up your next appointment!
