Keeping Your Pets Safe During The Hot Summer

Pets Safe During the Hot Summer

As temperatures rise and the sun beats down in full force, summer brings plenty of heat in Middle Tennessee. Like you and your household, your pets are also victims of the summer heat, and there are several ways you can care for them to ensure their safety and health are top of mind throughout the hot summer.

Stay off the asphalt.

If you normally walk your dog or cat on the blacktop, be mindful of the time of day when you walk on the asphalt. As humidity rises and temperatures soar, the asphalt heats up, making it very prone to burning your pet’s sensitive skin on the bottom of its paws. If walking your pet on the blacktop is your only option, make sure to only walk outside during the cooler hours, and minimize the amount of time your pet is in contact with it.

Bring your pets inside.

Much like their owners, pets can suffer from heatstroke, too. All of that fur and hair covering their bodies makes them susceptible to easily overheating during the hot summer months in Nashville. Any exercise or exertion outside should be carefully monitored and limited to shadier spaces and the cooler hours of the day. Bring your pets inside on hot days so they don’t overheat, become burned, or even worse.

Top off their water supply.

Dehydration is a real and very valid concern during the summertime. Replenish your pet’s water supply after you wake up, before you go to bed, and several times throughout the day. Hydrating your pet before and after you exercise them will make a world of a difference in their health and safety during the summer months.

Visit the vet for a check-up.

It’s never a bad time to visit the vet for a check-up, and you’ll always be glad you opted to be safe over sorry when it comes to taking preventive measures for your pet to shield them from potential future harm. We recommend scheduling a check-up with your local vet to make sure all necessary vaccinations are up to date and that your pet’s health is in good condition.
